Throughout the history of English literature, issues of crime and justice have preoccupied writers of literature. In this collection thirteen literary scholars explore the subject of crime in a wide range of literary works. The volume begins with an essay by Northrop Frye on crime and sin in the Bible and concludes with one by Josef Skvorecky on detective stories. In between are essays by other nothed contributors on crime in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Middleton's A Fair Quarrel, Fielding's Jonathan Wild, Scott's The Heart of Midlothian, Dickens' Our Mutual Friend, Faulkner's Sanctuary, Dreiser's An American Tragedy, Wright's Native Son, Wiebe's The Scorched-Wood People, as well as various works by Oscar Wilde and a number of Canadian playwrights. Edited by a distinguished legal scholar, the collection offers insights into the history of criminal law and the criminal process, as well as wider questions of the meaning and forms of justice.
